Stow it

Boats and ships move constantly. On board a boat or ship you can't drop your gear and tools and expect them to be there the next time you need them. Sailors develop meticulous habits for taking care of their gear.

That means there is a special place for every item in a sailor's gear. When a sailor needs a tool, he knows exactly where it is, and can find it in an instant, even in the dark. That also means that a sailor usually performs only one task at a time, then puts his tools away before going on to the next task.

A boat is a tidy place. Sailors are tidy people. Their mothers would be impressed.
